The most robust IRMS solution for honey adulteration testing

BiovisION Honey is a robust new solution developed exclusively for the detection of honey fraud and honey adulteration. The isotope ratio mass spectrometer system is designed to detect C4 (cane, high fructose corn syrup) and C3 (beet, rice) sugar adulteration of honey, protecting buyers and consumers from substandard products. It also allows to identify the geographic origins of honey samples, preventing honey products from being fraudulently mislabelled to increase their value. BiovisION Honey delivers a highly reliable performance that minimizes downtime and offers unparalleled cost-effectiveness.

In the current market, demand for honey adulteration tests is on the rise. Greater value is being placed on the purity of this natural, energy-rich product than ever before, with rules laid out by the Codex Alimentarius stating that no other substances or additives can be added to honey. At the same time, consumer demand for honey products is increasing and honeybee populations are in decline, meaning fraudulent providers are seeing considerable incentives to flood the market with adulterated products.

Utilizing our extensive knowledge of high-temperature combustion chemistry, BiovisION Honey provides a significantly more robust and simpler solution than other honey testing technologies, making it quicker, cheaper, and easier than ever to detect common adulterants in honey.

Features

Extreme durability thanks to highly robust, high-temperature combustion method

Typical LC-IRMS of honey samples relies on the wet-chemical oxidation method, which tends to be associated with significant downtime due to maintenance requirements and blockages. BiovisION Honey uses a high-temperature combustion method that is significantly more reliable, offering a 10-year furnace warranty and maximizing uptime and efficiency for contract analysis laboratories.

Ease of use due to automated performance with minimal maintenance

Unlike many of the current market-leading honey testing solutions, BiovisION Honey’s analytical processes are highly automated, with little manual control or optimization required. Data acquisition and processing is also handled by the lyticOS® Software Suite, allowing laboratories to focus on the science, rather than the processes.

Significant cost-effectiveness benefits over time

Because of the increased throughput, lower cost of consumables and reduced cost per analysis delivered by BiovisION Honey, you will be able to benefit from substantial savings and efficiency gains over time.

High data quality thanks to high-temperature combustion method

The high-temperature combustion method delivers exceptional precision and levels of detection. Due to the unique delivery of LC mobile phase into the furnace system, the instrument produces low and noise-free baselines, whilst the high-temperature combustion chemistry ensures the isotopic fractionation-free conversion to CO2.

Product details

BiovisION Honey is a complete solution for stable isotope-based honey adulteration analysis, consisting of the following modules:

Isotope ratio mass spectrometer isoprime visION

isoprime visION stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer

isoprime visION offers a completely new experience of stable isotope analysis, providing you with freedom from the routine chores of maintenance and allowing you to focus on the science, not the instrumentation.

Its thorium dioxide-coated filament is substantially more resistant to oxidation failure during LC-IRMS analysis, while its stainless steel vacuum chamber provides better tolerance to high water vapor loads. The ionization filament is provided with a 12-month guarantee against physical failure giving you the confidence that instrument downtime will be significantly improved compared to other manufacturers instrumentation.

Additionally, the system’s efficiency is second-to-none, with Good-For-Go control significantly reducing instrument contact time, automated switching between LC and EA inlet systems, an economical sleep mode and pre-configured methods ensuring the instrument rapidly offers a strong return on investment.

isoprime visION is also almost 50 % smaller than any other equivalent system, meaning it can fit seamlessly into any laboratory environment.

Liquid chromatograph iso CHROM® LC

iso CHROM® LC interface

Available exclusively for use with BiovisION Honey, iso CHROM® LC presents a new technique for the detection of C3 honey adulteration. Unlike existing technologies that use wet-chemical oxidation, iso CHROM® LC harnesses our depth of experience in high-temperature oxidation chemistry to create a high-performance liquid chromatography interface.

This new technique is more robust, easier to use and offers higher analytical precision without any compromise in chromatography, precision, or accuracy. Whereas wet-chemical oxidation at 90 °C requires significant downtime, the 925 °C high-temperature method involves substantially less maintenance and is easier to use, making it more suitable for contract analysis laboratories.

Additionally, the exceptional detection levels means iso CHROM® LC is able to produce low and noise-free baselines, due to the unique delivery of LC mobile phase into the furnace system, while the high-temperature combustion chemistry allows for isotopic fractionation-free conversion to CO2.

Agilent 1260 Infinity II LC system

Agilent 1260 Infinity II liquid chromatography system

The 1260 Infinity II LC system from Agilent Technologies is a highly reliable instrument that combines the latest column technologies and advanced supplies to guarantee robust separation and detection performance.

The LC system is specifically configured for the separation of honey carbohydrates. A pure water mobile phase is pumped by a pulse-free isocratic pump through a Phenomenex Rezex RSM-Monosaccharides Ca2+ separation column. With an autosampler capacity for up to 132 x 2 ml sample vials, your laboratory will be able to perform large unattended runs generating significantly improved return on investment. You can find out more about the 1260 Infinity II LC from Agilent here.

Isotope ratio mass spectrometry software ionOS

lyticOS® BiovisION Honey operating license for acquisition and data processing

lyticOS® Software Suite is designed to facilitate automatic data processing and straightforward and easy-to-use control of the entire system.

Designed completely from the ground up for an exceptional user experience, lyticOS® is the most sophisticated yet simple software suite ever created for this purpose. Its clean user interface belies the level of sophistication within, giving users unrivalled capabilities to generate exceptional data with ease, thanks to its automatic peak mapping and isotope difference calculations.

lyticOS® controls the entire BiovisION Honey system, including the Agilent 1260 Infinity II LC system, giving the operator completely integrated, intelligent control of every aspect of the analysis. With the real-time maintenance counters and detailed diagnostic tools like automated leak checking, contact user time with the instrument is significantly reduced giving more time for sample analysis.

vario ISOTOPE select elemental analysis upgrade

For users who are seeking a quick and simple EA-IRMS solution for C4 honey adulteration, the optional vario ISOTOPE selectelemental analysis upgrade allows the conversion of bulk organic material to pure gases for isotope ratio analysis.

With a range of unique features for robust analysis and straightforward maintenance, the vario ISOTOPE select is the ideal choice for compliance with the AOAC 998.12 method for the detection of C4 honey adulteration. It provides fully automated operation, with a 240-position autosampler, high throughput, and reduced helium consumption to minimize the cost per analysis.

The vario ISOTOPE select is also ideal for investigating the geographical origin of a honey using multi-elemental isotope analysis. δ15N, δ13C and δ34S values can be determined quickly from a single sample analysis via its unique Temperature Programmable Desorption (TPD) gas separation technique, which allows laboratories to rapidly screen samples and build an authentic sample database.

ArDB software suite

ArDBis an optional software suite that allows seamless transfer of sample information and results between the database and your instruments. Bringing together sample results for numerous analytical techniques, including IRMS, ICP-MS and TIMS, it eliminates transcription errors, duplication, and inconsistent data handling.

The software facilitates the construction and maintenance of centralized sample databases offering automatic recording of calibrated analytical results for each sample and provides a full audit trail for any changes made. It also provides an array of sophisticated analytical tools for interrogating and visualizing the data.

As such, this can be an essential tool for identifying C3 sugar adulteration of honey using LC-IRMS methods or C4 sugar adulteration via AOAC 998.12. It can also help you confirm a honey’s true geographic origin.

  • Detection of C3 honey adulteration using iso CHROM® LC
