Burn mark without consequences? Optical emission spectrometry with spark excitation in material testing
OES is based on short-term plasma generation by electrical spark discharge in an inert gas atmosphere. A small area of the material surface is subjected to local thermal and mechanical stress, producing a characteristic burn mark. This local material alteration raises the fundamental question of the extent to which the analysis process influences the material’s microscopic properties, that is answered in this Technical Note.
