A simpler way to detect exogenous C4 sugar adulteration in apple juice using LC-IRMS

Naturally occurring sorbitol can be measured in the same LC-IRMS run as the major sugars and provides a reliable isotopic reference point for detecting added C4 sugars in apple juice - a common adulteration issue.

By measuring sorbitol alongside the other sugar components, the method removes the need for extensive sample preparation and multiple analytical workflows, making routine analysis much more straightforward. Coupled with the excellent robustness and ease-of-use of the iso CHROM LC interface, the method could be a significant development to help detect food adulteration.
